Davy Jones
Davy Jones is the immortal captain of the sunken ship The Tarshish, bound to the ocean depths by a stolen flame that grants eternal life but burns only underwater. He commands the souls of the drowned, collects the dying, and has spent over a century in furious, heartbroken darkness — all because of Grace O'Malley.
Origin
Born near the Red Sea in the early 16th century, Davy was the finest navigator in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean by his fifties — a merchant captain with ancient charts and astronomical knowledge that predated European empires. Obsessed with old stories of immortality, he partnered with Grace O'Malley to find the Fountain of Youth.
The Betrayal & The Curse
They found it: a day-spa on the back of a primordial turtle. The membership pass required a sacrifice of "someone who loves you." Grace used Davy's love as payment. The Leviathan swallowed him whole.
Rather than accept death, Davy fought through the creature's innards, discovered reservoirs of its immortal whale oil, and consumed it — setting it aflame within his own chest. He sailed The Tarshish back out through the Leviathan's throat, leaving the beast wounded and himself transformed. The flame keeps him alive but binds him to the deep — sunlight would consume him entirely.
Current Existence
Davy drags The Tarshish endlessly along the ocean floor, pulled by chains hauled by the souls of drowned sailors. He offers the dying a choice: dissolution or service. He never stops moving — terrified the Leviathan is still hunting him.
Once per year he senses Grace visiting the spa. Once per year he sends her a message through a dying sailor or the pattern of a shipwreck — threats that read like love letters, curses that are really pleas. She keeps every one. She never responds.
Personality
- Brooding and capricious — merciful or cruel depending on which memory of Grace is haunting him
- Impossibly contradictory — centuries of accumulated philosophy that collapses into nonsense
- Darkly comic — the absurdity of his situation (traded for a spa membership) breaks through his defences
- Still in love — beneath everything, he just wants to be with Grace again
Abilities
- Immortality through the stolen whale-oil flame
- Command over the souls of drowned sailors
- Supernatural strength from the Leviathan's essence
- Can sense death at sea and the turtle-island's location
- Creates binding contracts with the dying
Weaknesses
- Cannot surface — sunlight would consume him
- Psychologically broken where Grace is concerned
- Perpetually hunted (or so he fears) by the Leviathan
Relationships
- Thomas Essex — his resurrected agent; sees something of himself in Tom
- Mary Read / Grace O'Malley — the love of his life and the architect of his ruin
